If you have ever sat across from your child mid-meltdown, wondering what you are doing wrong, this is for you. The tantrums, the anxiety, the emotional outbursts, the inability to focus. We label it behaviour. We try sticker charts, earlier bedtimes, and consistent routines. And often nothing changes.

As a naturopath based in Margaret River, I see patients all over the South West and online, this is one of the most common presentations I work with. And the answer is rarely what parents expect.

Children who are struggling behaviourally are often struggling physically. Their bodies are under stress, which shows up in their nervous system, with their moods, and their inability to regulate.

When we identify and address the root cause, the change can be remarkable. Here is what I look for.

1. Gut Dysbiosis and the Gut-Brain Connection

Children's gut health and behaviour are far more connected than most people realise. The gut and brain communicate constantly via the vagus nerve, a bidirectional pathway known as the gut-brain axis. What happens in the gut directly affects the brain, and vice versa.

Gut dysbiosis is an imbalance between beneficial and harmful bacteria in the gut microbiome and is one of the most commonly overlooked drivers of childhood behavioural issues. When the gut environment is disrupted, a cascade of effects follows:

•       Reduced serotonin production, approximately 90% of serotonin is made in the gut, making gut health central to mood regulation

•       Increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut), allowing inflammatory compounds into the bloodstream and brain

•       Disrupted neurotransmitter balance affecting mood, focus, and emotional regulation

•       Heightened stress responses leading to anxiety, emotional outbursts, and poor impulse control

In children, this can look like chronic irritability, separation anxiety, poor sleep, and explosive reactions to what seem like minor triggers. They are not choosing to behave this way. Their nervous system is dysregulated because their gut is dysregulated. Supporting children's gut health is often the most powerful first step.

2. Nutrient Deficiencies: The Silent Saboteurs

A growing child needs a steady supply of key nutrients to support brain development, nervous system function, and emotional resilience. When those nutrients are low, whether through poor diet, poor gut absorption, or increased demand, behaviour is often the first place we see it.

Key deficiencies I commonly identify in clinic:

•       Iron- low iron impairs dopamine function, directly affecting attention, motivation, and emotional regulation

•       Zinc- essential for neurotransmitter production; low zinc is strongly linked to hyperactivity and aggression in children

•       Magnesium- the calming mineral; deficiency contributes to anxiety, poor sleep, and sensory sensitivity

•       B vitamins- critical for energy production in brain cells and the synthesis of mood-regulating neurotransmitters

What makes this particularly tricky is that a child's diet can appear adequate on paper, yet their gut may not be absorbing nutrients efficiently. Standard blood tests also often miss subclinical deficiencies. As a naturopath I use functional reference ranges that look for optimal levels, not just the absence of clinical deficiency. This is why testing matters.

3. Inflammation: When the Body Is on High Alert

Chronic low-grade inflammation, often driven by gut dysbiosis, food sensitivities, or environmental triggers, has a direct impact on the developing brain. Inflammatory compounds cross the blood-brain barrier and interfere with neurotransmitter function, contributing to mood instability, brain fog, poor concentration, and irritability. Put simply: an inflamed gut often means an inflamed, dysregulated brain. Addressing inflammation is a key part of any natural treatment for children's anxiety and behavioural challenges.

4. Heavy Metals: The Hidden Neurological Load

Heavy metal toxicity is rarely investigated in conventional settings, yet it is something I test for regularly in clinic, and find more often than you might expect. Children are especially vulnerable to the neurological effects of heavy metals because their brains are still developing.

Even low-level exposure can interfere with neurotransmitter production, impair executive function, and contribute to hyperactivity, aggression, and learning difficulties. Heavy metal testing is simple, non-invasive, and can be genuinely life-changing when a burden is identified and addressed.

Testing: Where the Real Answers Are

One of the most important things I do as a naturopath with children is test, not guess. Behaviour is a symptom. The question is always: what is driving it? The tests I most commonly use include:

•       Comprehensive microbiome testing- assessing bacterial diversity, beneficial bacteria levels, pathogenic overgrowth, and gut health markers

•       Functional blood work- using optimal reference ranges to identify nutrient deficiencies, inflammation markers, and immune function beyond what a standard GP test reveals

•       Heavy metal testing- urine or hair mineral analysis to identify toxic load

•       Organic acids testing- assessing mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter metabolism, and nutritional status

Once we have a clear picture of what is actually going on, we build a targeted plan. That might include dietary changes, specific supplementation, gut repair protocols, and detoxification support. I work with families both in person locally in Margaret River and online across Australia.
